Painting & staining in Nelson, Richmond & Motueka

Inside, outside, decks, fences and roofs. The prep is the part that decides how long it lasts.

I take on interior and exterior painting, deck and furniture oiling, fence staining, roof painting and signage across Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Māpua and the wider Tasman district.

Rooms, whole exteriors or a single tired fence. Quotes are free.

Scope

What I paint

Interior painting

Rooms, ceilings, trim and doors. Furniture moved and covered, edges cut in properly, and the place left clean.

Exterior painting

Weatherboards, cladding, joinery and trim. Surfaces washed, prepped and primed before anything decorative goes on.

Fence staining and painting

New fences sealed before the weather gets into them, and old ones cleaned back and recoated.

Deck and furniture oiling

Decks, outdoor furniture and timber features cleaned and oiled so they stop going grey.

Roof painting

Roofs prepped and recoated once the surface is sound. Worth pairing with roof maintenance in one visit.

Signage

Painted and finished timber signage for businesses and properties.

Why it matters

Paint is the easy part

Almost every paint job that fails early fails because of prep, not paint. Painting over dirt, chalk, rust, moss or flaking coating buys you a good-looking year and then it starts lifting.

So the washing, scraping, sanding, filling and priming is where the time goes. It is the least interesting part of the job and the part that decides whether you are doing it again in three years or fifteen.

It is also worth being honest about scale. A single room or one tired fence is a perfectly normal job to call about. So is a whole exterior. Tell me what you have got and I will price it.

A long timber boundary fence, the kind that gets stained to protect it

Worth knowing

Worth doing when you see

  • Paint that has started flaking, blistering or peeling away from the surface.
  • Chalky residue coming off on your hand when you touch exterior cladding.
  • Timber that has gone silver-grey and rough, which means the coating has given up.
  • Rust spotting coming through on a roof or metalwork.
  • Filler, patches or repairs that have never been painted over.
  • Colours you have simply had enough of looking at.

Reviews

What Tasman locals say

I highly recommend Daniel from Handy Property Care! He helped us with repairs around the house, including some roof work and fixing a shelf in the kitchen. He was efficient, friendly, and punctual, and his prices are reasonable.

We are very pleased with the work that Dan from Handy Property Care has done on our properties. His completed work is of a high standard, whether outside (garden maintenance) or indoors. He recently refurbished a bathroom that had extensive water damage, and again, superb workmanship.

Dan communicates clearly, turns up when he says he will, does a great job and charges appropriately. He's done long grass strimming for me twice now and I'd highly recommend him. I'll be back for all future tasks needing doing!

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Not covered here? Call me on 021 0839 2908 and ask.

Do you do small painting jobs, or only whole houses?

Both. A single room, a hallway, a front door or one fence is a completely normal job to call about. Plenty of people want one thing done properly rather than a whole house at once.

How much prep is involved?

As much as the surface needs, which is the honest answer. Washing, scraping, sanding, filling and priming all depend on what state it is in. I will tell you what is required before starting, because that is what most of the cost and most of the durability sits in.

Can you paint in winter?

Interior work, yes, all year. Exterior work depends on temperature and moisture, and there is no point applying a coat that will not cure properly. I will be straight with you about timing rather than rushing it on a bad week.

Do you supply the paint?

I can, or you can. If you have a colour or a brand you want, tell me. Otherwise I will recommend something suited to the surface and the exposure it gets.

Can you stain a new fence?

Yes, and it is worth doing before the timber has weathered. Sealing a new fence early protects it from the outset, rather than trying to recover it in a couple of years.
