Fencing services in Nelson, Richmond & Motueka

New fences, gates and repairs. Built straight, built to stand up to a Tasman winter.

I build and repair residential fences across Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Māpua and the wider Tasman district.

New boundary fences, palings, pickets, post and rail, gates, plus repairs, straightening, painting and staining. I handle the whole job from pulling out the old fenceline to the final cleanup. Quotes are free.

Scope

What I build

New fence construction

Full boundary fences from scratch. Post holes dug, posts set properly, rails and palings fixed square and straight.

Picket and decorative fences

Front fences where the look matters as much as the boundary. Pickets, capping and gates to match.

Post and rail

Rural and lifestyle block fencing. Paddock boundaries, driveway edges and the long runs that need to sit level over uneven ground.

Fence repairs and straightening

Rotten posts replaced, leaning sections pulled back upright, broken palings swapped out. Usually cheaper than starting again.

Gates and hardware

Gates built and hung so they still swing properly in a year. Latches, hinges, drop bolts and stops.

Painting and staining

New fences sealed before the weather gets to them, and tired ones brought back with a clean and a fresh coat.

Why it matters

A fence is worth building properly once

A solid fence does more than mark a boundary. It gives you privacy, keeps kids and dogs where they should be, and it is one of the first things anyone notices about a property.

The difference between a fence that lasts and one that leans is almost always in the part you cannot see. Post depth, concrete, drainage and timber choice decide whether it is still straight in ten years. That is where I spend the time.

I take on the whole job, from clearing the old fenceline through to taking the rubbish away at the end. No two sites are the same, so I will walk it with you and talk through height, style and materials before pricing anything.

Worth knowing

Why locals get me to do it

  • Built to last, with proper post depth and timber that suits the site rather than whatever is cheapest.
  • Every site is different, so height, style and materials get chosen for your section, not off a template.
  • Local to Tasman. I turn up when I say I will, and I treat your property like someone lives there.
  • The whole job, start to finish, including clearing the old fence and taking the mess away.

What Tasman locals say

I highly recommend Daniel from Handy Property Care! He helped us with repairs around the house, including some roof work and fixing a shelf in the kitchen. He was efficient, friendly, and punctual, and his prices are reasonable.

We are very pleased with the work that Dan from Handy Property Care has done on our properties. His completed work is of a high standard, whether outside (garden maintenance) or indoors. He recently refurbished a bathroom that had extensive water damage, and again, superb workmanship.

Dan communicates clearly, turns up when he says he will, does a great job and charges appropriately. He's done long grass strimming for me twice now and I'd highly recommend him. I'll be back for all future tasks needing doing!

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Not covered here? Call me on 021 0839 2908 and ask.

How long does a new fence take?

A straightforward residential boundary is usually a few days depending on length, access and ground conditions. Posts need time to set before the rails and palings go on, so it is not all done in one hit. I will give you a realistic timeframe with the quote.

Do I need council consent for a fence?

In most cases a residential fence up to 2.5 metres does not need building consent, but there are exceptions, and pool fencing has its own rules entirely. Check your specific situation with Tasman District Council before work starts.

Who pays for a fence on a shared boundary?

Under the Fencing Act 1978 neighbours generally share the cost of an adequate dividing fence, and there is a formal notice process for it. It is worth a conversation with your neighbour early. I can quote the work either way, but the cost sharing is between the two of you.

Can you repair my fence rather than replace it?

Often, yes. If the posts are sound then leaning sections, rotten rails and broken palings can all be sorted for a lot less than a new fence. If the posts have gone, repairs become false economy and I will tell you that straight.

What timber do you use?

Treated pine for most residential work, with the treatment level matched to whether the timber is in the ground or above it. If you want something different for a feature fence, tell me and I will price it.
